The ing form of the verb is also known as “Verb form V4” and “Present Participle form of Verb”. If you know the base form of a verb you can change it to its -ing form by just adding “ing”.

However, there are verbs for which we need to make some spelling changes as well. Therefore, you should know the predefined set of rules that we have for different verbs.

Let’s understand the rules that we use while changing a verb to its -ing form.

Rules for Ing Form of Verb

Rule No. 1

For most of the verbs, you can just add “ing” to the end of the verb to change it to its ing form (present participle form of the verb).

For example;

• Accept – Accepting
• Build – Building
• Cook – Cooking
• Develop – Developing
• Feed – Feeding
• Read – Reading
• Work – Working

Rule No. 2

If there is an “e” at the end of a verb, you need to remove the “e” and then add “ing.”

For example;

• Achieve – Achieving
• Behave – Behaving
• Convince – Convincing
• Dance   Dancing
• Escape – Escaping
• Forgive – Forgiving
• Operate – Operating

Rule No. 3

When the sequence of the last three letters of a verb is “Consonant Vowel Consonant”, then you have to double the last letter before adding ing to it.

Note: The English alphabet a, e, i, o, and u are known as “vowels”, and the rest of the alphabet are consonants.

For example;

• Admit – Admitting
• Chat – Chatting
• Clap – Clapping
• Drag – Dragging
• Occur – Occurring
• Run – Running

Rule No. 4

If a verb ends with an “ie”, you have to replace “ie” with “y” and then add “ing.”

For example;

• Die – Dying
• Lie – Lying
• Tie – Tying
