Common Word Stress Patterns in English
English word stress is not always easy to guess, but some patterns can help.
1. Many two-syllable nouns and adjectives stress the first syllable
Examples include TA-ble, MOTH-er, PIC-ture, SIL-ent, and MOD-ern.
This pattern is common, but it is not a rule for every word. Words such as ad-VICE, ca-REER, and ho-TEL have stress on the second syllable.
